Gustatory processing, which is the sense of taste, is often overlooked when it comes to sensory differences. This is why it is important to understand and address gustatory processing in children with sensory difficulties. Gustatory processing plays a significant role in our daily lives. It helps us determine the taste, texture, and temperature of the food we eat.

Gustation sensory difficulties can be a very challenging experience for some children. They may be sensitive to certain tastes and textures, making it difficult for them to eat a variety of foods. They may also have a limited range of food preferences, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies and impact their health.

Gustation tools have been developed to help children with sensory processing difficulties. These tools provide a positive and enjoyable eating experience for children and their families. Let's take a look at some of these sensory gustation tools that are available for children.

Chewelry - This is a type of sensory necklace or bracelet that children can wear and chew on to fulfill their oral sensory needs. It is made of safe, non-toxic materials and comes in various designs and colors to cater to different preferences.

Sensory Spoons - These spoons are designed with different textures and shapes to stimulate the senses while eating. They can help children who are sensitive to the texture of food to overcome their aversion and enjoy their meals.

Food Chopper - This kitchen tool is designed to chop and blend food into a smooth consistency, making it easier for children with sensory difficulties to eat. It is especially helpful for children who have a sensitivity to lumps in their food.

Food Picks - These are small, colorful picks that can be inserted into food to make it more visually appealing for children. They can also be used to separate different foods on a plate, making it easier for children with sensory difficulties to focus on one food at a time.

There are also strategies that parents can use to help children with sensory processing difficulties when it comes to eating. These include introducing new foods gradually, using positive reinforcement, and creating a calm and supportive environment during meals.

Gustation tools are not a one-size fits-all solution for children with sensory difficulties. Every child is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. It is very important to consult with an occupational therapist to determine the best approach for each child.
