When you have a child who struggles with sensory differences, life can be incredibly challenging. Not only for the child but also for their families too. Building and nurturing a supportive community around you is so important because it really does take a village. It is okay to ask for help when you need it.

When parents have children with sensory processing disorder, their journey can be very isolating. The constant search for the right therapies, finding sensory tools, parenting, misunderstandings and criticism from others around them, all contribute to a feeling of being overwhelmed each day. A supportive community isn't just beneficial but it is essential for maintaining a parents well being while they go through these challenges.

Having the right community around you can offer a lifeline. It is important to connect with others who validate and understand you. Connecting with other people who understand the challenges of sensory processing disorder offers a sense of belonging and reduces a parents feelings of isolation. These shared experience minimize feelings of blame or inadequacy.

Parents who have neurodiverse children can learn from each other's experiences, exchange practical tips, learn different strategies and techniques for managing their children's sensory sensitivities. They can discover helpful resources and therapies that have worked for others too.

When parents share their struggles and triumphs with other parents who "get it", it can alleviate stress,  provide emotional support and encouragement during the most difficult times. Together parents can raise awareness about sensory differences and advocate for better resources and support systems within schools and within our communities for families.

Online parent support groups have become invaluable resources for neurodivergent families. Online support groups can offer 24/7 access to a network of support that can help parents connect with others from anywhere in the world. There are so many benefits to joining support groups. Parents can share their experiences anonymously and connect with others who "get it" from the comfort of their homes.

When a parent builds a strong support network around them and joins a supportive community that understands and embraces neurodiversity, it is so important for empowering parents and helping families thrive. Together, we can create a village where everyone feels seen, heard, accepted and supported. You are strong, valued, loved, special and capable.
